Health Conference
April 20. The new
award was given by The University of Ala-
bama Institute for Rural Health Research
at the conference hosted by the Institute
and the University’s College of Community
Health Sciences/School of Medicine.
Throughout the year, the DCH Health System rec-
ognizes employees from its hospitals in Tuscaloosa,
Northport, Fayette and Pickens County for excellence
on the job.
The employees were nominated by their peers to
receive recognition awards based on various criteria,
including outstanding job performance, attitude,
dependability and dedication to the mission of the
Health System and its patients and employees.
DCH Regional Medical Center
Susan Dowdle and
Amy Griffin were the recipients of the DCH Regional
Medical Center Excellence Award for the first quarter
of 2012.
Dowdle, Budget and Accounting Manager in the Fi-
nance Department, has been employed at the Regional
Medical Center since July 1993.

Medical Center since September 1981.
Northport Medical Center
Rachel
Green and Shirley Matthews were named recipients
of the Employee of Excellence Award at Northport
Medical Center, which presents this award twice a year.
Green, a Registered Nurse in the Intensive Care
Unit, has been employed at Northport Medical Center
since December 1998.
Matthews, an EVS Specialist in Environmental
Services, has been employed at Northport Medical
Center since June 2007.
Fayette Medical Center
Bill Brown was the recipi-
ent of the Employee of Excellence Award for the fourth
quarter of 2011. He is a housekeeper and has been
employed at Fayette Medical Center since May 2010.

DCH registry technologist
as statewide Hospital Hero
Libby Junkin, RT, (R)(CT) (ARRT), an
Advanced Registry Technologist in the
Radiology Department at DCH Regional
Medical Center, was honored as a state-
wide Hospital Hero in January by the
Alabama Hospital Association (AlaHA).
AlaHA’s ninth annual Hospital Hero con-
test recognized the dedication of hospital
employees and highlighted health careers.
Local Hospital Heroes were chosen in
each of AlaHA’s seven regions of the state,
and from that pool, 10 people were selected
as statewide heroes.
Junkin was one of three Regional Medi-
cal Center employees who were regional
Hospital Heroes. The others are Angie
Shaw, RRT, Respiratory Care Department
Adult Clinical Care Coordinator, and
Kandie Brewer, RN, Cardiac Surgical Unit
Charge Nurse.
Dr. William R. “Bob” Brooke II, Pickens
County Medical Center Emergency De-
partment Medical Director, was named a
regional Hospital Physician Hero.
The Swing Bed Program at Pickens
County Medical Center is an extension
of the hospital stay to help patients heal
and gain strength so they can regain their
independence and return home. The staff
works with patients and their family to
create treatment plans based on the spe-
cific needs of a patient.
The program helps patients improve
their physical, social and emotional
abilities through skilled nursing care and
therapy. Patients who are recovering and

“The men and women we have hon-
ored truly represent the best in health
care,” AlaHA President J. Michael Horsley,
FACHE, said at an awards luncheon. “Each
of these dedicated individuals views their
profession as more than a job; they con-
sider it a calling.”
Junkin has worked in the Radiology De-
partment at the Regional Medical Center in
various positions for 28 years. A graduate
of the DCH School of Radiologic Tech-
nology, Junkin has worked as a routine
technologist, an ultrasound technologist
and the desk/patient flow coordinator. She
currently is employed as a 3-D technologist
in the computed tomography imaging area
at the hospital.
AlaHA is a Montgomery-based state-
wide organization that represents and
supports more than 100 Alabama hospitals
in their efforts to provide high quality
health care.
Andrew Lee, Trauma Coordinator at
DCH Regional Medical Center, received a
Rural Health Heroes Award for his work
after the April 27, 2011, tornado. He was
the winner in the Primary Health Care
Provider category, which recognized his
work that went “beyond the call of duty”

The Swing Bed Program is a Medicare
program designed to provide additional
inpatient care. Medicare requires that a
patient have a qualifying three-day acute
care stay within the last 30 days to be eli-
gible for Swing Bed care.
